ToggleWhat is Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery is commonly referred to as a “boob job.” It is a procedure where the size of the breasts is increased. This is usually achieved by placing an implant behind the breast tissue.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
There are two ways that breast augmentation can be done in our Charleston surgical suite. The most common way that breasts are made larger is with implants. The implant is placed behind the breast tissue. You can also have a breast augmentation by transferring fat from other areas of your body to your breasts.
If you are having a breast augmentation with implants, there are several different options for how this can be performed.

I can’t say enough about the level of kindness and professionalism, and concierge treatment I received at La Femme. Every single interaction was wonderful. Everyone in the office is top notch. Dr. Mason is a shooting star and fast on her way to surgeon stardom (and maybe as a podcaster as well). She is an artist and a perfectionist and is also honest, clear, straightforward, and no nonsense. Incredible bedside manner. By my third visit I felt like we were good friends. ☺️ Best of the best. Update: Dr. Mason did fix the problem I had from my surgery and they look much better. I still have so much pain in the scars on the left side which is disheartening, but overall I am now happier with the results. I had a breast reduction with Dr. Mason. While the sides where she did lipo did look reduced, my actual breasts never looked that much smaller. I did end up losing 25 pounds which helped later. My disappointment is with my nipples. They look so bad that I am embarrassed to be seen naked now. One is completely puckered/indented on one side. I had discussed fixing it with them and I reached out to them to try to schedule through their portal and they never responded to me. I will probably try to find another doctor at this point to fix it. The doctor did seem to be a nice, kind person when she did my surgery and she did find a breast doctor to remove the benign tumor I had before she did the reduction (at the same time).Posted on Google![]()

I’m so grateful for Dr. Mason and her team. They made me feel safe, well informed, and genuinely comfortable from start to finish. Everyone is incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating, and they were able to coordinate my consultation and procedure in the same visit, which made everything so much easier. I traveled from out of state to see Dr. Mason because of her reputation, and she truly lived up to it. I couldn’t have had a better experience. I highly recommend Dr. Mason and her team to anyone considering a procedure!Posted on Google![]()

I’ve researched getting a tummy tuck for years, And have had so many consultations, As soon as I went into this office and did my consultation, I knew this was the right doctor for me. The environment is warm and inviting, the entire staff is welcoming and helpful and Dr. Mason was kind, professional, and caring from day one. Unlike other offices, she listened to my concerns and was open and realistic about expectations for my results and never tried to sell me on anything or pressure me into booking. The pricing was direct and upfront, there were no surprises or “add ons” I received everything I was promised and am so happy I found La Femme. I would recommend them to any friends/ family and couldn’t be happier with my results so far.Posted on Google![]()

I am only about three weeks out from surgery so I haven’t realized my full results yet however I cannot say enough, good things about this facility. Every single person who works there is helpful, compassionate and communicative. Dr. Mason’s bedside manner is exceptional. She and her staff walked me through every aspect of the process ensuring I had realistic expectations. Dr. Mason was also very careful to ask probing questions and listen to my response to ensure she was giving me exactly what I wanted Not what she thought I should have. I had no complications thus far and very little pain. From Madison to Genesis and Kara, and the rest of the team I was very well taken care of. I opted to stay over in the surgical facility for peace of mind and I’m glad I did. Tiara looked after me very well and she had a fantastic disposition. She kept a very close eye all night and helped me walk often to ensure I began healing from the get go. Because I’ve not seen my full results yet, I can say that my absolute favorite part is the lymphatic massages with Arlene. She is wonderful, and I love that these were included in the healing process. I only wish I could continue them with her forever! I am so glad I chose them.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Mason and her team are wonderful to work with. I had my consultation for a breast reduction on 12/11/25, and I was approved by insurance within six days. Dr. Mason and her staff were extremely patient and answered all of my questions, whether in person or over the phone. My procedure was on 3/2/26, and the recovery process has been great so far. I’ve even received follow-up calls from Dr. Mason and her team after surgery, which I really appreciated. On the day of surgery, Dr. Mason and her team walked my mom and me through everything before the procedure started, which made me feel very comfortable and prepared. I’m so happy with the results. The final payment is due at the time of your pre-op appointment. My only issue was that it took the staff a little while to give me an accurate final amount. Also, you may have to pay a deductible for the anesthesiologist, and I didn’t find out how much that would be until the day of surgery. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend Dr. Mason and her team.Posted on Google![]()

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Mason and her entire staff. From my very first consultation to my surgery day and recovery, they were absolutely amazing — kind, professional, and so supportive every step of the way. I had been nervous for months about getting my breast reduction, but Dr. Mason made me feel completely comfortable and confident. She took the time to explain everything, answered all my questions, and truly cared about me as a person, not just a patient. Her staff went above and beyond — checking on me, keeping me calm before surgery, and making sure I felt safe and cared for afterward. The whole team radiates compassion and skill. I can honestly say this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I finally feel lighter, more confident, and free of the neck and shoulder pain I’d lived with for years. Thank you, Dr. Mason & Team!!! 💕💕💕💕Posted on Google![]()

I had a breast reduction and upper back lipo with Dr. Rachel Mason, and the entire experience has been exceptional. I previously had a reduction in 2022 with another surgeon who did great work, but I realized I wanted a further reduction. I was referred to Dr. Mason, and I am so glad I chose her. From the first consultation, I felt comfortable and genuinely cared for. The staff is wonderful — Genesis has been amazing to work with, the office manager is warm and relatable, and their lymphatic masseuse is highly skilled. Dr. Mason herself is kind, soft-spoken, humble, and has a wonderful sense of humor. She made me feel heard, supported, and confident in my decision. A thoughtful touch that stood out was the beautifully packaged aftercare gift bag at my post-op appointment — a small gesture that truly made the experience even more special. I’ll continue to see Le Femme for follow-up care and lymphatic massages, and I highly recommend Dr. Mason and her team to anyone considering surgery.
Type of Breast Implants
Round silicone breast implants are commonly used for breast augmentation surgery. They have the advantage of feeling more natural, with less chance of visible rippling.
New silicone breast implants have a gel inside that is very cohesive, so even if the outside of the implant ruptures you may not be able to tell since the gel inside will hold its shape.
This can be both a good thing and a bad thing: the benefit is that if it ruptures you likely won’t have any immediate sign that would need surgery urgently. The downside is that it is hard to detect any break in the implant, so screening is recommended.
Saline breast implants are also commonly used for breast augmentation. The main advantage of saline implants is that the implants cost less than silicone implants. They have a slightly higher chance of rippling.
If a saline breast implants break or “ruptures,” it is immediately noticeable. This has the benefit that you do not need screening to know if it has ruptured, but the downside that you will have an obvious difference in the size of your two breasts until you have surgery to correct it.
“Gummy bear” or shaped anatomic implants have a more natural shape than traditional round implants. They are shaped like a teardrop to hold more volume in the bottom of the implant than the top, just like a real breast.
This can give a softer, more natural look to the upper part of the breast. These implants are more expensive than round implants.
Breast Implant Placement
Under the muscle: During an augmentation, breast implants are often placed behind the breast underneath the pectoralis muscle. The muscle covers the top part of the implant where there is the least breast tissue. This helps to camouflage the top edge of the implant making it less visible. It is particularly important if you do not have natural breast tissue at the top.
Another advantage is that the risk of capsular contracture is lower. One of the downsides is that if you do upper body exercises, the implant will visibly move when you flex your pectoralis muscles. This is called an animation deformity.
Also, in the first few days or weeks after surgery, the muscle will spasm as it gets used to being stretched out by the implant. This will get better with time.
Above the muscle: Implants can be placed behind the breast tissue but above the pectoralis muscle. The advantage of this position is that there is no animation deformity. Also, there is no spasm of the muscle since it is not stretched. This is only a good option if you have thick enough tissue at the top of your breast, otherwise, the implant can be too visible.
Breast Implant Incision
Inframammary Fold
The most common place for your incision is in the fold underneath your breast. This is called an inframammary breast augmentation incision. There are several reasons to choose this incision.
First of all, it is a well-hidden area. Generally, you will only see it if you lift up your breast or you are laying down topless. It can be hidden under almost any bikini. It gives the surgeon a good point of view to make the best shape and symmetry. It also has the lowest risk of problems like capsular contracture in the long term.
Periareolar incision
Another option is an incision around the bottom of your areola where it meets the normal skin. This is called a periareolar incision. This can be a well-camouflaged area for the incision.
However, if the scar does not heal well, it can be a very obvious scar. Also, there is a higher risk of capsular contracture and possibly infection since the implant has to go through all the natural breast tissue, instead of underneath it like in the inframammary incision
Axillary incision
Implants can be inserted through an incision in your armpit. The advantage is a well-hidden scar. The downside is that the surgeon does not have as good of a point of view to place the implant correctly, and again, there is a higher risk of capsular contracture than there is with an inframammary incision.
Breast Implant Size
The size of breast implants you get is a very personal question. Dr. Mason will measure how wide your natural breast is, and then to start with will look at implants that will fit inside the boundaries of your natural breast.
Larger implants can be used; they will just not have a natural look and maybe more obviously seen and felt on the sides. The decision is entirely up to you and should be made based on what look you want.
When you schedule a breast augmentation consultation, you will be able to “try on” different implant sizes in the clinic to see what you like best. You can pick the size that helps you achieve the look you want.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Breast augmentation recovery timeline can vary for each individual due to the uniqueness of every woman’s body. While there is no precise schedule, most plastic surgeons generally agree that a full recovery typically takes around six weeks on average.
Expect initial soreness and swelling, which will naturally subside. Invest in recovery bras for comfort, implant stability, and lymph drainage. Prep your home and wardrobe in advance, secure pain medications early, and arrange for assistance, especially if you have children. Prioritize rest and stock up on easy, healthy foods to aid recovery.
Many women might find themselves feeling completely well after approximately one week post-surgery. To get a more accurate timeline tailored to your specific circumstances, Dr. Mason will evaluate your overall health before the procedure.

Breast Implants FAQ
How much is a gummy bear boob job?
The price of gummy bear implants for breast augmentation in Charleston can fluctuate based on various elements, including the fees charged by the surgeon, expenses related to the facility, and the location’s specific economic conditions. Generally, the expenditure for this type of breast enhancement procedure is estimated to fall between $7,000 and $9,000.
Which is better breast lift or breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation and breast lifts are sought-after methods for enhancing your look, each serving distinct purposes. Augmentation enlarges your breast size, whereas a lift elevates sagging breast tissue. Combining these two procedures can achieve the desired breast shape, position, and size.
Who offers the best breast augmentation near me?
Female plastic surgeon Dr. Rachel Mason of La Femme Plastic Surgery.
Are there any natural breast augmentation?
For those interested in increasing their breast size or improving shape in a natural way, without the use of synthetic implants, fat grafting or fat transfer is an option worth considering. This technique involves your surgeon transferring fat cells from another area of your body to your breasts, offering a natural appearance and texture.
What is the 45-55 breast rule?
The 45-55 breast rule in aesthetic plastic surgery defines the ideal breast proportions where 45% of breast volume sits above the nipple and 55% below, creating natural beauty that our best breast augmentation surgeons consistently recommend for optimal patient results.
How long does a boob job last?
Modern breast augmentation using the latest surgical techniques typically lasts 10-15 years, with many patients achieving natural looking results for 20+ years. Like other body procedures, longevity varies based on individual patient factors and chosen implant type.
What are the Risks of Breast Implants?
Complications related to implants, including discomfort in the breasts and alterations in sensation in the nipple and breast area.
- The possibility of further surgical interventions, which may or may not involve the removal of the implant (refer also to Implant Removal).
- Capsular contracture, which is the development of scar tissue around the implant, leading to compression of the implant.
- Implant rupturing and deflating.
When is working out after breast augmentation alright?
Should your plastic surgeon give the green light, you may resume your regular exercise routine, encompassing weight lifting for the upper body and running. It’s important to remember that healing rates vary from person to person, so pay attention to your body’s signals as you gradually reintroduce more vigorous exercises into your daily schedule.
Can you have breast augmentation after breastfeeding?
It is advisable for many women to postpone any breast cosmetic surgery until up to six months following the cessation of breastfeeding. This waiting period allows your body to stabilize and gives the breast tissue ample time to “settle” into its permanent shape.
What’s the most attractive breast shape?
The teardrop breast shape with a 45:55 ratio is considered most attractive by research studies. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss breast procedures that help achieve your specific aesthetic goals while maintaining natural proportions and overall body harmony.
Which age is best for breast enlargement?
Most patients choose breast enlargement in their 30s at our established cosmetic surgery practice in Charleston NV. We also offer tummy tuck procedures, breast cancer reconstructive surgery, and cancer treatment recovery options for comprehensive care.
