What Is a Facelift?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a facial plastic surgery procedure that aims to naturally rejuvenate the face and neck by removing signs of aging, including wrinkles, loose skin folds, and drooping. The goal is to reduce overall sagging skin, smooth the planes of the face, and give the patient a younger look without looking unnatural.

Depending on the specific goals and pain points of the patient, in addition to correcting signs of aging on the facial skin, a neck lift may be combined with a facelift as well. This will correct loose neck skin and tighten sagging jowls.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Anyone with serious medical conditions that may complicate surgery or create problems during facelift recovery will not be a good candidate. Facelift and neck lift surgery patients should also be non-smokers. Strong candidates for any plastic surgery procedures, including face and neck surgery, must be in good overall physical health.

Most facelift patients tend to be in their 40s, 50s, or 60s. And while this age range isn’t set in stone, it’s important to note because all facelift candidates must still have good skin elasticity.

In general, ideal facelift candidates have visible signs of facial aging, including deep wrinkles, fine lines, sagging excess skin, and drooping beneath the eyes and along the jawline.

I can’t say enough about the level of kindness and professionalism, and concierge treatment I received at La Femme. Every single interaction was wonderful. Everyone in the office is top notch. Dr. Mason is a shooting star and fast on her way to surgeon stardom (and maybe as a podcaster as well). She is an artist and a perfectionist and is also honest, clear, straightforward, and no nonsense. Incredible bedside manner. By my third visit I felt like we were good friends. ☺️ Best of the best. Follow the office on IG!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Update: Dr. Mason did fix the problem I had from my surgery and they look much better. I still have so much pain in the scars on the left side which is disheartening, but overall I am now happier with the results. I had a breast reduction with Dr. Mason. While the sides where she did lipo did look reduced, my actual breasts never looked that much smaller. I did end up losing 25 pounds which helped later. My disappointment is with my nipples. They look so bad that I am embarrassed to be seen naked now. One is completely puckered/indented on one side. I had discussed fixing it with them and I reached out to them to try to schedule through their portal and they never responded to me. I will probably try to find another doctor at this point to fix it. The doctor did seem to be a nice, kind person when she did my surgery and she did find a breast doctor to remove the benign tumor I had before she did the reduction (at the same time).

I’m so grateful for Dr. Mason and her team. They made me feel safe, well informed, and genuinely comfortable from start to finish. Everyone is incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating, and they were able to coordinate my consultation and procedure in the same visit, which made everything so much easier. I traveled from out of state to see Dr. Mason because of her reputation, and she truly lived up to it. I couldn’t have had a better experience. I highly recommend Dr. Mason and her team to anyone considering a procedure!

I’ve researched getting a tummy tuck for years, And have had so many consultations, As soon as I went into this office and did my consultation, I knew this was the right doctor for me. The environment is warm and inviting, the entire staff is welcoming and helpful and Dr. Mason was kind, professional, and caring from day one. Unlike other offices, she listened to my concerns and was open and realistic about expectations for my results and never tried to sell me on anything or pressure me into booking. The pricing was direct and upfront, there were no surprises or “add ons” I received everything I was promised and am so happy I found La Femme. I would recommend them to any friends/ family and couldn’t be happier with my results so far.

I am only about three weeks out from surgery so I haven’t realized my full results yet however I cannot say enough, good things about this facility. Every single person who works there is helpful, compassionate and communicative. Dr. Mason’s bedside manner is exceptional. She and her staff walked me through every aspect of the process ensuring I had realistic expectations. Dr. Mason was also very careful to ask probing questions and listen to my response to ensure she was giving me exactly what I wanted Not what she thought I should have. I had no complications thus far and very little pain. From Madison to Genesis and Kara, and the rest of the team I was very well taken care of. I opted to stay over in the surgical facility for peace of mind and I’m glad I did. Tiara looked after me very well and she had a fantastic disposition. She kept a very close eye all night and helped me walk often to ensure I began healing from the get go. Because I’ve not seen my full results yet, I can say that my absolute favorite part is the lymphatic massages with Arlene. She is wonderful, and I love that these were included in the healing process. I only wish I could continue them with her forever! I am so glad I chose them.

Dr. Mason and her team are wonderful to work with. I had my consultation for a breast reduction on 12/11/25, and I was approved by insurance within six days. Dr. Mason and her staff were extremely patient and answered all of my questions, whether in person or over the phone. My procedure was on 3/2/26, and the recovery process has been great so far. I’ve even received follow-up calls from Dr. Mason and her team after surgery, which I really appreciated. On the day of surgery, Dr. Mason and her team walked my mom and me through everything before the procedure started, which made me feel very comfortable and prepared. I’m so happy with the results. The final payment is due at the time of your pre-op appointment. My only issue was that it took the staff a little while to give me an accurate final amount. Also, you may have to pay a deductible for the anesthesiologist, and I didn’t find out how much that would be until the day of surgery. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend Dr. Mason and her team.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Mason and her entire staff. From my very first consultation to my surgery day and recovery, they were absolutely amazing — kind, professional, and so supportive every step of the way. I had been nervous for months about getting my breast reduction, but Dr. Mason made me feel completely comfortable and confident. She took the time to explain everything, answered all my questions, and truly cared about me as a person, not just a patient. Her staff went above and beyond — checking on me, keeping me calm before surgery, and making sure I felt safe and cared for afterward. The whole team radiates compassion and skill. I can honestly say this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I finally feel lighter, more confident, and free of the neck and shoulder pain I’d lived with for years. Thank you, Dr. Mason & Team!!! 💕💕💕💕

Types of Facelift Procedures

1. Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane facelift procedure involves repositioning the deeper tissues of the face by releasing key ligaments and repositioning the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) and the skin as one.

2. Mini Facelift

The mini facelift aims to reduce visible signs of aging by focusing on the lower third of the face. The jowls, chin, jawline, and neck all receive subtle enhancement.

3. Ponytail Facelift

The ponytail facelift mimics the tightening effects of wearing a ponytail by using small incisions in the hairline to pull back the mid face especially.

4. Liquid Facelift

The liquid facelift is not actually an invasive surgery. Instead, Botox and injectable fillers are used to reduce and smooth wrinkles.

5. Vampire Facelift

The vampire facelift uses injectables along with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to improve the texture and tone of the facial skin.

6. Non-Surgical Facelift

The non-surgical facelift may involve facelift techniques such as lasers, fat injections, dermal fillers, or microneedling to smooth and tighten the facial skin for a more youthful, radiant appearance.

7. Vertical Facelift

Whereas a traditional facelift tends to tighten the skin in a horizontal direction, the vertical facelift lifts the facial tissues upward. On select patients, this can provide a more natural-looking result.

8. Endoscopic Facelift

The endoscopic facelift uses an endoscope (small camera) and precise tools to carefully lift and rejuvenate the face. Ideally, the surgical procedure provides minimal scarring as incisions are very small.

9. Thread Facelift

The thread facelift uses medical grade thread beneath the skin to gently lift and tighten. This causes minimal downtime and provides immediate results.

Facelift Scars

Scarring after facelift surgery will depend on the type of facelift you have. For example, when it comes to facelift scars hairline incisions typically produce almost invisible scars because the hair covers them.

If your incisions were behind your ears or elsewhere, however, you may have somewhat visible scars. Still, keep in mind these will fade with time and proper care. Massage, silicone gel sheets, and staying out of the sun will help minimize their appearance.

Facelift Recovery

The duration of your facelift recovery period will also largely depend on the type of facelift you underwent. Mini facelift recovery may be shorter than deep plane facelift recovery, for example.

Most surgeries follow a recovery timeline similar to the following:

Week 1

Make sure you have someone to take you home directly following surgery. You will be swollen and bruised and may have some slight discomfort, which can be remedied with pain medication if necessary. Wear your compression strap as directed, and take it easy and rest.

Week 2

By this point, patients should no longer require pain medication and will be back to doing many of their normal daily activities. Swelling and bruising should be down but will likely still be present. Some patients may experience tingling and tightness.

Weeks 3-4

By the beginning of week 3, most patients are back at work and resuming much of their normal lives. 4 weeks after facelift still swollen? This is normal as long-term residual swelling is common following facelift surgery.

Week 5 and Beyond

Swelling may continue on for several more months after this point. However, you should be able to begin exercising normally again and going back to life as normal as you continue to see your results take shape.

Facelift Cost

Facelift cost depends on many factors, including pre-surgery testing, your surgeon’s experience and unique pricing, geographic location, anesthesia type, surgical facility or hospital costs, aftercare costs, and more.

The type of facelift you have will also make a difference. The cost of mini facelift vs full facelift, for instance, can be significant (mini facelift surgery may cost less). Book a consultation for more information about pricing for facelift cosmetic surgery.

FAQs: Facelift Surgery

How much does a facelift surgery cost?

Facelift cost varies widely, so booking a consultation first to discuss financing is recommended. Ultimately, the cost will largely depend on the type of facelift you get, with a mini facelift cost generally being less than the traditional facelift cost. Other factors like hospital and anesthesia expenses and geographic location will also come into play.

What is a lower facelift?

A lower facelift focuses on smoothing out wrinkles and visible signs of aging on the bottom third of the face. This includes the jawline, neck, and chin area.

Where can I get a facelift near me?

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rachel Mason performs facelift surgery for patients at her Charleston NV practice.

How can I minimize male facelift scars?

To minimize male facelift scars, be sure to first follow your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions. Avoiding sun exposure, using silicone scar sheets, and massaging the scar tissue (if recommended) can also help reduce scar appearance.

Does anyone regret a facelift?

Yes, some do, usually from misaligned goals, inadequate consultation, poor surgeon choice, or conspicuous scars. Satisfaction rises when patients pick a board-certified surgeon, align on goals, understand risks, scarring, recovery, costs, and maintenance. Get two to three opinions, study galleries, verify credentials, and discuss contingency options, including potential revisions upfront.

Is a mini facelift in 30s a good idea?

If you have clear signs of aging that bother you in your 30s, a subtle, less invasive enhancement like a mini facelift could provide benefits.

How long does a facelift last?

We cannot stop signs of aging completely, but with proper care and a healthy lifestyle, your results should last for at least several years.

Can you get a facelift without surgery?

Certain non-surgical options are available for facelift surgery, including the use of dermal fillers, fat transfer injections, lasers, and more.

What if I end up with a botched facelift?

If you are unhappy with your facelift results, we recommend contacting a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facelift surgery as soon as possible. A revision facelift may be necessary.

What’s the best age for a facelift?

No single best age; candidacy hinges on facial anatomy, skin laxity, cosmetic concerns, and natural aging process. Pursue facial rejuvenation procedures, facial rejuvenation, or brow lift with facial plastic guidance. Prioritize youthful appearance, natural appearance, realistic expectations, treatment plan; revision facelift under general anesthesia addresses facial muscles and drooping skin.

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?

Initial recovery is 1–2 weeks for bruising and most swelling; many return to desk work around days 10–14. Strenuous exercise typically resumes after 4–6 weeks. Numbness and firmness soften over 2–3 months, with refinement continuing up to 6–12 months. Follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions for the safest timeline and healing.
