ToggleWhat Is A Breast Implant Removal?
Breast explant surgery is the removal of a breast implant, with or without the scar tissue that surrounds it.
Why Should You Have Breast Implant Removal?
There are several reasons that Charleston women choose to have their breast implants removed: Because they don’t want them anymore, or they have issues after undergoing breast augmentation surgery.
Sometimes, as time goes on, women decide that they no longer want to have breast implants. Sometimes they want to go back to their more natural look, or they are tired of the feeling of their augmented breasts. Some women have had recurring issues with their breast implants like capsular contracture, implant rupture or infections.
It is completely reasonable to have them removed if you no longer want them. Keep in mind that sometimes the breast tissue has been stretched, so, when the implant is removed, they may not look exactly like they did before a previous breast augmentation.
Concern For BIA
There is now a known type of cancer that is associated with chest implants. It is called breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL. This type of cancer has been almost exclusively seen in patients who have had textured implants. Unfortunately, textured implants were very common and very popular for many years so this could be a concern for a large number of women.
Currently, women who have no symptoms can just be monitored and do not have to have any intervention. However, if you do have symptoms like breast swelling or fluid collection, you should be evaluated by a plastic surgeon.
Some Charleston women have no symptoms but are worried about the risk of developing BIA-ALCL. They may choose to have their textured breast implants removed all together or removed and replaced with silicone breast implants. Although this is not proven to eliminate the risk entirely, it is a logical and reasonable choice to increase peace of mind.
Breast Implant Illness
Another disorder that has been investigated recently is breast implant illness. The symptoms are somewhat vague and non-specific, like chronic fatigue, memory problems, anxiety, joint and muscle pains, anxiety or depression, rashes, and gastrointestinal issues.
Studies are underway to help better understand this illness and how to treat it, but it does seem that symptoms often get better when the implants are removed.
If you think you may have breast implant illness you should see a doctor first to make sure that your symptoms are not from any other cause before you seek to have your implants removed. If all other medical reasons have been ruled out, you may want to consider breast explant surgery.

I can’t say enough about the level of kindness and professionalism, and concierge treatment I received at La Femme. Every single interaction was wonderful. Everyone in the office is top notch. Dr. Mason is a shooting star and fast on her way to surgeon stardom (and maybe as a podcaster as well). She is an artist and a perfectionist and is also honest, clear, straightforward, and no nonsense. Incredible bedside manner. By my third visit I felt like we were good friends. ☺️ Best of the best. Update: Dr. Mason did fix the problem I had from my surgery and they look much better. I still have so much pain in the scars on the left side which is disheartening, but overall I am now happier with the results. I had a breast reduction with Dr. Mason. While the sides where she did lipo did look reduced, my actual breasts never looked that much smaller. I did end up losing 25 pounds which helped later. My disappointment is with my nipples. They look so bad that I am embarrassed to be seen naked now. One is completely puckered/indented on one side. I had discussed fixing it with them and I reached out to them to try to schedule through their portal and they never responded to me. I will probably try to find another doctor at this point to fix it. The doctor did seem to be a nice, kind person when she did my surgery and she did find a breast doctor to remove the benign tumor I had before she did the reduction (at the same time).Posted on Google![]()

I’ve researched getting a tummy tuck for years, And have had so many consultations, As soon as I went into this office and did my consultation, I knew this was the right doctor for me. The environment is warm and inviting, the entire staff is welcoming and helpful and Dr. Mason was kind, professional, and caring from day one. Unlike other offices, she listened to my concerns and was open and realistic about expectations for my results and never tried to sell me on anything or pressure me into booking. The pricing was direct and upfront, there were no surprises or “add ons” I received everything I was promised and am so happy I found La Femme. I would recommend them to any friends/ family and couldn’t be happier with my results so far.Posted on Google![]()

I am only about three weeks out from surgery so I haven’t realized my full results yet however I cannot say enough, good things about this facility. Every single person who works there is helpful, compassionate and communicative. Dr. Mason’s bedside manner is exceptional. She and her staff walked me through every aspect of the process ensuring I had realistic expectations. Dr. Mason was also very careful to ask probing questions and listen to my response to ensure she was giving me exactly what I wanted Not what she thought I should have. I had no complications thus far and very little pain. From Madison to Genesis and Kara, and the rest of the team I was very well taken care of. I opted to stay over in the surgical facility for peace of mind and I’m glad I did. Tiara looked after me very well and she had a fantastic disposition. She kept a very close eye all night and helped me walk often to ensure I began healing from the get go. Because I’ve not seen my full results yet, I can say that my absolute favorite part is the lymphatic massages with Arlene. She is wonderful, and I love that these were included in the healing process. I only wish I could continue them with her forever! I am so glad I chose them.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Mason and her team are wonderful to work with. I had my consultation for a breast reduction on 12/11/25, and I was approved by insurance within six days. Dr. Mason and her staff were extremely patient and answered all of my questions, whether in person or over the phone. My procedure was on 3/2/26, and the recovery process has been great so far. I’ve even received follow-up calls from Dr. Mason and her team after surgery, which I really appreciated. On the day of surgery, Dr. Mason and her team walked my mom and me through everything before the procedure started, which made me feel very comfortable and prepared. I’m so happy with the results. The final payment is due at the time of your pre-op appointment. My only issue was that it took the staff a little while to give me an accurate final amount. Also, you may have to pay a deductible for the anesthesiologist, and I didn’t find out how much that would be until the day of surgery. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend Dr. Mason and her team.Posted on Google![]()

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Mason and her entire staff. From my very first consultation to my surgery day and recovery, they were absolutely amazing — kind, professional, and so supportive every step of the way. I had been nervous for months about getting my breast reduction, but Dr. Mason made me feel completely comfortable and confident. She took the time to explain everything, answered all my questions, and truly cared about me as a person, not just a patient. Her staff went above and beyond — checking on me, keeping me calm before surgery, and making sure I felt safe and cared for afterward. The whole team radiates compassion and skill. I can honestly say this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I finally feel lighter, more confident, and free of the neck and shoulder pain I’d lived with for years. Thank you, Dr. Mason & Team!!! 💕💕💕💕Posted on Google![]()

I had a breast reduction and upper back lipo with Dr. Rachel Mason, and the entire experience has been exceptional. I previously had a reduction in 2022 with another surgeon who did great work, but I realized I wanted a further reduction. I was referred to Dr. Mason, and I am so glad I chose her. From the first consultation, I felt comfortable and genuinely cared for. The staff is wonderful — Genesis has been amazing to work with, the office manager is warm and relatable, and their lymphatic masseuse is highly skilled. Dr. Mason herself is kind, soft-spoken, humble, and has a wonderful sense of humor. She made me feel heard, supported, and confident in my decision. A thoughtful touch that stood out was the beautifully packaged aftercare gift bag at my post-op appointment — a small gesture that truly made the experience even more special. I’ll continue to see Le Femme for follow-up care and lymphatic massages, and I highly recommend Dr. Mason and her team to anyone considering surgery.
Breast Implant Removal And Lift
With this breast surgeries, your breast implant is extracted, followed by the tightening and lifting of your skin to enhance the aesthetic of your breast. Incisions, made in the nipple area and the lower portion of your breast, occasionally in the fold, serve to tighten loose skin. The inclusion of a breast lift will extend the total duration of your breast implant removal surgery by an additional hour.
The recovery time for this procedure is comparable to that of breast implant removal. However, the associated risks are slightly elevated, including:
- Diminished sensation in the areola,
- Reduced feeling in the nipple,
- Challenges with breastfeeding, and
- Delayed wound healing.
Breast Implant Removal Recovery
After undergoing breast implant removal surgery, you may be provided with gauze dressings or bandages, and drains could be employed. Wearing a support bra or surgical garment may be recommended during breast implant removal recovery, and there are instances where a compression garment is utilized to reduce post-surgery swelling.
Following the procedure, drains—small, slender tubes might be temporarily inserted under the skin within the pocket to facilitate the drainage of any surplus blood or serous fluid that may accumulate.
The healing process will extend over several weeks as swelling gradually diminishes. It is crucial to adhere to the instructions provided by your plastic surgeon and attend scheduled follow-up visits to ensure proper recovery.
